Transfer of Firearms Following Private Sale in Minnesota

If you attend one of our (on-seller’s site) auctions and purchase 1) a handgun, or 2) a military-style semi-auto. assault weapon, you will need to supply us with a permit to carry a handgun, or a permit to purchase a handgun.

Firearm private sale changes effective in Minnesota this year will require the seller and buyer to obtain and retain (for 10 years) a “Private Party Record of Transfer”. As part of our auctions, when held on a seller’s site, we will assist the seller and buyer in the paperwork needed to legally transfer those types of firearms. Maintaining the record of the transfer will be the responsibility of the seller and the buyer after auction day.

Reinhardt Auction Service will still have purchasers fill out our internal form after purchasing any firearms at our auctions, but now buyers will also be obligated to supply us with their permit to carry/purchase at the auctions on which they buy handgun or assault weapons.

If you are interested in knowing what type of information is gathered, and or what paperwork we will require you, as a buyer, to fill out, see www.dps.mn.gov/divisions/bca. Links also available to view what types of firearms are defined as “military-style semi-auto. assault weapons”.
